STAFF ROLES
WAYS TO LEAD, MENTOR & TEACH
EVERYONE AT HAWKEYE WORKS WITH KIDS
The Director? Yup, he leads hiking trips, runs special activities, and is in on woodworking, archery and athletics. How 'bout the Nurse? Of course, you'll find her out on the trail with kids, teaching arts & crafts projects, and around camp for Bugs & Dirt as well. Fine, but not the chef, surely? Definitely! Our chef teaches cooking, oversees Iron Chef everyday, leads our Make Your Own Pizza afternoons and shows cabin groups all sorts of culinary skills.
Don't worry, there's plenty left for counselors to do! There are two specific types of counseling staff members at Hawkeye: Cabin Counselors and Program Area Specialists. We also have roles on the Administrative team for chefs, maintenance staff, and health team members. Hover over any of the pictures below to learn more.
CABIN COUNSELORS
Mother Goose, Pied Piper, or Ring Leader...whatever you call them, our cabin counselors are leading the way! Just like conducting an orchestra, the primary duties of the cabin counselors are to unify campers, set the tempo, deliver clear expectations, listen carefully, and guide the group atmosphere over the course of the summer.
Cabin counselors spend most of their day with their group at various activities and are responsible for the positive group develop of the bunk. They typically develop close bonds with their cabin group members as they help each camper enjoy their summer to the fullest extent!
PROGRAM COUNSELORS
Let’s be frank, their real title should be FUN COORDINATORS!!! These counselors plan and prepare, organize and instruct, lead and execute activities in their specific Program Area. Days are spent mainly in the program area space; cabin and camper groups arrive during specific periods. When a group is not in the program area, Program Counselors should be reviewing quality and quantity of materials, setting up for the next activity, and making notes about specific dynamics of groups. Program staff live separately from campers but are assigned to a specific bunk and help with that cabin group. They will occasionally assist in another Program Area or cabin.
ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM & NON-COUNSELING STAFF
The Leadership Team provides guidance, mentorship, supervision and structure to the Staff Group and the Campers throughout camp. These individuals work closely with the Directors to lead, plan, organize and evaluate the regular and special programming throughout the summer. This team consists of Head Counselors (2), a Program Coordinator, and a Leadership Coordinator.
